Goldstone is one of the very few man-made stones we work with. It is actually a type of glass, formed by heating silica with copper oxide and other metal oxides. A delicate process is used to produce the tiny sparkling copper crystals which are suspended in the glass matrix, looking like gold dust which gives Goldstone its name.
The process of making Goldstone is believed to have originated in Italy in the 17th Century. These days, the majority of Goldstone is produced in Asia. Variations have been made by replacing copper with cobalt, which is known as Blue Goldstone.
