Collection: Blue John Jewellery
Our Blue John jewellery is set in hallmarked sterling silver and handmade in our Sheffield studio. We source the stone directly from Castleton in Derbyshire, its only location. The rarity of blue John, as well as its unique colouring and light reflecting properties, is why this stone is increasingly desirable and collectable across the world.
What is Blue John?
Blue John is a form of semi-precious fluorite with colours ranging from indigo blue, purple, yellow, gold and cream. Sometimes mistaken for amethyst, Blue John is distinguished by the translucent nature of fluorite, its colours are presented in layers, as if floating upon each other.
Since the 17th Century, larger pieces of Blue John were formed into ornaments including vases and even table tops. A famous clock crafted from Blue John was commissioned by King George III and is now in Buckingham Palace.
Nowadays only smaller deposits of Blue John are found in the caves, and finding high quality, deeply coloured pieces is becoming increasingly scarce.
We are happy to present our Blue John collection to you and hope you find something you like.
